Assemblymember Friedman Issues Statement Condemning Trump’s Executive Action on Immigration

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Laura Friedman, D-Glendale, issued the following statement on President Trump’s action on immigration:

“As the representative for the 43rd Assembly District, I join thousands of my constituents in condemning the inhumane and unconstitutional treatment of refugees, visitors and legal residents arriving at our shores.

“Just four days ago, the world recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day for all of us to pause and reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust, and to renew our commitment to fighting oppression, racism, and hatred wherever it may occur, even in our own backyard. Nearly 78 years ago, our government refused to admit the passengers of the St. Louis, a ship carrying over 900 passengers – almost all were Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. Our refusal to offer any compassion to these refugees in 1939 doomed 254 to die in the Holocaust.

“As a Jew, as a mother, and as an American, I find the President’s executive action repugnant and completely inconsistent with our values as a nation. It is incumbent upon all of us to remember the St. Louis, to extend the hand of compassion and humanity to those fleeing unspeakable crisis, and to ensure that all of our residents, regardless of their immigration status, are protected from being unfairly targeted or victimized due to their national origin or religion.”
