SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) named Skylight Books the 43rd Assembly District Small Business of the Year.  Skylight Books is an independent bookstore known for its selection of literary fiction, graphic novels, and children's books, along with books on Los Angeles history, political science, translated literature, and the arts.

“Skylight Books has always been more than a book store,” said Friedman.  “It’s been a warm and welcoming place for ideas, exploration, philanthropy, and advocacy for decades.”

Located in Los Feliz, Skylight Books has served the local community and countless authors, writers, musicians and scholars since opening its doors in 1996.  The store's author events program is nationally recognized and features over 300 authors a year. Skylight also partners with local schools on book fairs and author visits, sells books at conferences, fairs, and festivals around the city, and partners with local organizations, including the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Skylight Books was honored in the State Capitol as part of the annual celebration of Small Business Month, which brings together small businesses from communities across the state. Mary Williams, the store’s general manager, was on hand to receive the award.
