BURBANK – At last night’s Burbank Unified School District meeting, Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) joined leaders from the Armenian National Committee Burbank Chapter in expressing support for Resolution 23, calling for April 24th, 2019 to be the official day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923.
“In this era of rising intolerance, hatred, marginalization, it’s so important that we reach out to all our community members and really understand their story, their history, their trauma, their successes - everything that has left a mark on the culture and people.” said Assemblymember Friedman, “It is only through this understanding that we will have tolerance and a true sense of community.”
In her statement to the Board, she stressed the importance of recognizing and understanding the Armenian Genocide as an effective strategy towards preventing future atrocities.
The resolution passed unanimously with all five Boardmembers in support. Upon learning of the vote, Assemblymember Friedman praised the Board for its decision.
“I’m so proud that Burbank continues to model the value or bringing the community together as one united force to understand and rebuke hate. This is the rightful next step in expanding upon the stellar work of our community and showing our solidarity with our Armenian neighbors, friends, and family.”
