SACRAMENTO – On Wednesday, a bill by Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) that extends the period that landlords must give rent increase notices to tenants of month-to-month units passed the Assembly Floor. The measure, AB 1110, would expand the notification requirement to 90 days for rent increases between 10-15%, and 120 days if the increase is higher than 15%.
“Dramatically rising rents can create significant financial pressure on tenants from across the economic spectrum.” said Assemblymember Friedman. “But for the millions of Californians who are living paycheck-to-paycheck, having more time to plan for a rent increase can mean the difference between staying in their home and eviction.”
Rising housing costs are impacting communities and residents regardless of income status throughout California. Increased market pressure has caused rents to rise to an increasing degree and frequency. The unexpected expenses posed by a major rent increase are resulting in immediate strain and financial hardship on millions of California’s renters.
Under existing California law, rent increases under 10% require a 30 day notice. For increases over 10%, the law requires a 60 day notice to tenants. AB 1110 will expand the current notification period required by state law for increases over 10% in order to provide renters more time to make the financial adjustments necessary to stay in their unit or secure other housing options.
The bill passed the Assembly on a vote of 58-19 and now heads to the Senate. If signed into law, AB 1110 will take effect on January 1, 2020.
