Fremont Park’s Long Sought Renovation Finally Coming to Fruition Thanks to Assemblymember Friedman’s Budget Wins

For immediate release:
Assemblymember Laura Friedman Secures Nearly a Million Dollars for the Cash Strapped Project

SACRAMENTO —Over100 years old, Fremont Park in Glendale, California is 7.9 acres of picturesque open space that features a basketball court, children’s play area, 4 horseshoe courts, picnic areas, 8 tennis courts, a volleyball court, and a wading pool. Fremont Park’s amenities and location have long made the park a popular destination, but it is an aging one. The process of renovating Fremont Park has been in the works since at least 2013, when funds to renovate the city’s oldest park were originally allocated, but the Master Renovation Plan has been short the necessary funding to complete the project. Assemblymember Friedman secured $933,000 in the 2023-24 State Budget to help bring the project to a close.

”This money will enhance and update facilities in one of the densest part of Glendale where green space is a rare and treasured resource,” said Assemblymember Friedman. The Fremont Park Master Plan will bring amenities such as a community building containing meeting rooms, a kitchen, restrooms, and office space that can be rented out by the public. It will also add a soccer field, a splash pad, pickleball courts, a drive path, and a walking path, exercise equipment, picnic pavilions, BBQ’s, and much needed additional parking.

“By investing in Fremont Park, we’re investing in our community and ensuring that Glendale families can continue to enjoy the park for the next 100 years,” said Friedman.

“Not everyone can have a garden or extended green space at home. Parks ensure equitable access that can lead to better health for Glendale residents,” says Glendale Mayor Dan Brotman. “Fremont Park has been a long-planned project, with equity and community need at the forefront of planning. We thank Assemblymember Friedman for helping secure funding for Fremont Park and thereby ensuring access to this vibrant open space for all to enjoy.”

Parks are a space where community members congregate, where we teach our children about safety and to enjoy nature. “Fremont Park is where I learned to play tennis years ago, and where I bring my nephews who love this playground. I want to take this opportunity to thank Assemblymember Friedman for her support on this long-awaited renovation of a park that serves across generations. The need for open space is an integral part of our community mental health and wellbeing. Its prime location just steps away from our largest affordable housing project will also ensure that our residents in multi-family units have access without needing transportation, said Glendale Councilmember Elen Asatryan.

Construction work will begin this month and finish in February of 2025.
