Assemblymember Friedman: More Homeless Shelters Needed

(Los Angeles) – Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) joined Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to call for $1.5-billion state dollars to fund additional homeless shelters in California. “We have a crisis of homelessness on the streets of California but what we don’t have is a crisis in the hearts of the people of Los Angeles,” said Assemblymember Friedman. “Our collective hearts break each time we walk past our neighbors on the streets. Friedman is supporting Assembly Bill 3171, which would require local governments to match the requested $1.5-billion state dollars, resulting in $3 billion to fund homeless shelters, rental assistance, permanent housing and other efforts. Subcommittee on Sexual Harassment Focuses on Making Policies That Work

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale), Chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Rules, Subcommittee on Sexual Harassment Prevention and Response, brought in specialists and experts for the committee’s second hearing. “Our goal is to provide our committee membership with the information we need to craft solutions that are both innovative and durable,” said Assemblymember Friedman as she opened the hearing. “This is our chance to establish an effective new model and we’re determined to get it right.” Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.

Assemblymember Friedman Joins 2nd Annual Women's March LA

(Los Angeles) – Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) joined hundreds of thousands of others for the 2nd annual Women’s March through the streets of downtown Los Angeles. “The days where we wait for men to invite us to the table are over. We are building our own table,” Assemblymember Friedman said. SHARE Act Gives Victims More Time

(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) and Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes (D-San Bernardino) have introduced legislation to give victims of sexual harassment more time to file claims. Assembly Bill 1870, the SHARE Act (Stopping Harassment and Reporting Extension), would extend the statute of limitations on claims of harassment from its current period of just one year to three under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA). “For decades, the deck has been stacked against victims of sexual harassment,” said Assemblymember Laura Friedman, Chair of the Joint Rules Subcommittee on Sexual Harassment Prevention and Response. “Ending workplace harassment shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Assembly Committee Looks to Expand Health Care

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale), a member of the Select Committee on Health Care Delivery Systems and Universal Coverage, quizzed health care experts and officials during the Committee’s two days of hearings at the State Capitol. The Committee will continue its investigation into improving access to and the delivery of health care with additional hearings throughout the state. “I believe we have a fundamentally broken system that is completely inequitable in how it delivers care,” said Assemblymember Friedman as the capitol hearings drew to a close. “I believe we put way too much into this system and way too much of it gets eaten up through administrative and other costs.” Learn more in this Assembly Access video.

Assembly Committee Looks to Expand Health Care

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale), a member of the Select Committee on Health Care Delivery Systems and Universal Coverage, joined the Committee at the State Capitol for the first in a series of hearings to be held statewide on improving access and the delivery of health care. “I’m not a health care expert but you do not have to be an expert to believe our health care in America is fundamentally broken,” said Assemblymember Friedman. “We also don’t have to be experts to know that people die in this country because of a lack of access to quality, affordable health care.” Learn more in this Assembly Access video.

I Stand with the Dreamers

(Sacramento).- The pressure is mounting on the White House and the President to protect the five year old immigration program know as DACA. The program allos undocumented immigrants who entered the country as minors, to receive a two year period od deferred action from deportation and makes them eligible for a work permit. Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) says she is standing by the nearly 800,000 young people know as "Dreamers" have benefitted from this program around the United States, over 200,000 of them are in California. Friedman Supports Turkish Divestment Legislation

(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) joined the majority of the State Assembly in her support of the Divestment from Turkish Bonds Act (AB 1597), authored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (D-West Toluca Lake), to hold Turkey accountable for their continued denial of the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians. "Every year this Assembly has passed resolutions to urge our own government to acknowledge the genocide," said Assemblymember Friedman. "Well, now it's time to put some teeth in those resolutions." AB 1597 prohibits the boards of the CalPERS and CalSTRS from making additional or new investments, or renewing existing investments issued, owned, controlled, or managed by the government of Turkey. More specifically, CalPERS and CalSTRS must liquidate any of the investments described above within six months of the passage of a federal law imposing sanctions on Turkey. Landmark Climate Change Legislation Passed by Legislature

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) joined a bipartisan majority of legislators in approving historic climate change legislation, Assembly Bill 398 and Assembly Bill 617. The combination of the two measures will create a statewide climate action plan and program to meet our emission reduction mandate, ensure economic prosperity and address critical health and air quality concerns.
